Exit 18W
Exit 18W is an autobiographical novel set in 1986. The plot goes like this:
Nineteen-year-old Robin elopes with rich-boy Cliff as a way out of her dead-end working-class job and into a world of travel and adventure, drugs and sex. Plus, she believes they want the same thing: to be Lou Reed in 1972, the year Transformer came out, cool and queer with a guitar in his hands and a banana down his pants.
Only the trip is gritty and Cliff is unpredictable. Erratic. He’s vulnerable and generous, sexually curious, but also controlling, cruel, and narcissistic.
When Robin’s long-time best friend Rachel joins the couple for their honeymoon road trip, she sees the truth: Robin and Cliff are spiraling towards mutually-assured destruction. And it’s up to Rachel to pull Robin out of it.
